The Belém Tower was built in the early 16th century to guard the entrance to Lisbon's harbour and the monastery, and shares its UNESCO listing.
Inside, you climb the narrow stairs through the tower's floors to the terrace, with views over the river and the monuments of the Discoveries.
It's about 15 minutes' walk west of the monastery along the river.
Space inside is limited and the stairs are narrow, so visits are controlled and tickets often sell out. Expect to wait at busy times. Free on Sundays and holidays for residents of Portugal only.
